What is the relation between culture and globalization? - LEEKIHOON
1. Summary
Culture and globalization are having multiple impacts from one another, being shared in many ways. As a result, the spread of various cultural elements is accelerating as countries are connected and interdependence is increasing. For example, in K-pop and Hollywood, cultural products have gained worldwide popularity due to such globalization and are now more accessible to everyone than ever. However, there are some things that need to be discussed in this process, and one of them is that these develop around the uniformity and domination of culture. In other words, globalization risks promoting cultural exchange and at the same time strengthening the dominant culture. This could lead to the weakening of local traditions. The global spread of English is a prime example of this cultural dominance. Culture is no longer passively consumed, but actively reinterpreted by each individual, and people create new identities by mixing its social and global influences, which shows that the flow of culture is not one-sided.
2. What was interesting
What was interesting was that the relationship between culture and globalization was presented in a balanced way by presenting a negative side as well as a positive side. Usually, globalization is viewed only as a negative aspect of cultural imperialism in which Western cultures eat other cultures, but this also acknowledges that, but from a new perspective, it shows that cultural audiences are no longer passive and actively reinterpret cultures and create new things. After all, it was good to show that globalization can be a crisis but also a new opportunity, and that the future of culture changes depending on how we progress.
3. question for discussion
The summary referred to the dominant influence of Western culture as "danger," and as in the case of K-pop, can non-Western cultures have dominant influence globally in the future? If so, can this shift of domination be seen only as a positive phenomenon different from previous Westernization? It explains that the hybridization of cultures creates new and creative identities, and I wondered whether the spread of these hybrid cultures would result in weakening the unique identity of traditional cultures, or rather a positive process for individuals to have a more multi-layered and rich identity.
