What is globalization? | Yun Shinji

1.  Summary

It is difficult to define the concept of ‘globalization’ with a single meaning, as the term is used in various contexts with different implications. Sociologist Roland Robertson describes globalization as “the compression of the world and the intensification of consciousness of the world as a whole". Robertson and White further elaborate it as two main trends “an increase in global interconnectedness” and "an increase in global consciousness". In this way, globalization is a complex phenomenon in which the world becomes closely connected across borders, and it is used in multiple ways in different contexts.

Globalization can be broadly divided into three dimensions cultural, political, and economic. Among them, cultural globalization is the phenomenon we experience most directly in our daily lives. For example, a cultural content that becomes popular can spread worldwide and be shared globally. However, this phenomenon also raises concerns about cultural homogenization, where cultures around the world gradually become more similar. On the other hand, from the perspective of diversification, different cultures maintain their uniqueness while actively interacting, thereby broadening the scope of global culture. There is also the perspective of fusion, in which entirely new cultures are created through the encounter of different cultures.

2. New Knowledge

I had never thought deeply about globalization before. However, with the development of media and technology, I realized that globalization is no longer an abstract concept, but one of the most important characteristics of the era we live in.

In particular, the lesson on ethnocentrism had a significant impact on me. As a child, I vaguely thought it was something to be proud of that our culture had a global influence, but I realized that such a perspective could be a dangerous view that fails to respect cultural diversity. Moreover, the stronger globalization becomes, the more we need to respect the unique characteristics of different cultures and turn these interactions into positive exchanges an important task for our generation.

3. Questions for Discussion

First, as a continuation of the previous class on “career exploration from the perspective of globalization”. I hope to discuss what we need to prepare for in order to truly develop “global competence”. In today’s society, it is important not only to have foreign language skills but also to deeply understand and communicate across diverse cultures. I hope to discuss what specific attitudes or experiences are needed to become a successful global professional.

Second, I hope to ask the question "what will a globalized world look like 100 years from now?" In the future, I believe technology will be far more advanced, increasing opportunities to interact with people from other cultures. I hope to discuss whether completely new forms of culture will emerge, unlike anything we imagine today, or whether new types of cultural conflicts will arise.

4. Using AI

I used GPT to translate and refine the sentences.
