What is the relation between politics and globalization? - Kim minji

1. Summary

Globalization has a complicated relationship with democracy. On one hand, it has helped spread democracy by allowing information to flow freely, promoting human rights norms, and encouraging international cooperation among civil societies. Even in authoritarian countries, the internet and social media have given citizens more access to information and more opportunities to express their opinions.

Globalization has also created an era where governments are no longer the only players in politics. Many non-state actors—such as international NGOs, multinational corporations, the media, and networks of experts—now have political influence.
Organizations like Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and Doctors Without Borders play important roles in areas such as human rights, the environment, and humanitarian aid. They shape global public opinion, put pressure on governments and international organizations, and sometimes take direct action to solve problems. The growth of social media has made their activities even more powerful.

Globalization has also strengthened international organizations such as the United Nations (UN), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank. These organizations coordinate cooperation among countries, set international rules, and respond to global challenges.
However, global governance still faces problems of democratic legitimacy. The decision-making processes of international organizations are often far removed from ordinary citizens, and they are criticized for lacking transparency and accountability. The question of who should monitor and control these institutions remains an unresolved issue.

2. My thought

Through this course, I realized how deeply politics is intertwined with our daily lives, and how globalization has made it increasingly complex. Every aspect of our country’s environmental, labor, and economic policies is now shaped within an international context. This made me reflect on what our votes and political participation truly mean within such a complicated global structure.

We must strive to build a more transparent and democratic system of global governance. Civil society should have greater participation in the decision-making processes of international organizations, and democratic oversight over the activities of multinational corporations must be strengthened. At the same time, to ensure that the benefits of globalization are not concentrated in the hands of a few, we need to reinforce social safety nets and help people adapt to change through education and retraining.

3. Use of AI

I wrote this text myself, and used AI only to help with translation and to smooth out the wording.

Comments

  1. I read your article with great interest. I especially sympathize with the fact that it deals with the ambivalence of globalization on democracy. I wrote an essay similarly with this thought, and I think it is very important that you pointed out the issue of democratic legitimacy of international governance organizations in addition to the positive aspect that the free flow of information can put pressure on the country. I also thought that the part in Part 2 that we should reflect on "what our voting and political participation really mean in this complex global structure" pointed out exactly the biggest political dilemma that modern citizens like us have. There are no questions to be discussed in this article, but if we talk about ways to secure the democratic legitimacy of international organizations, I think that various channels should be expanded so that civil society can officially participate in the decision-making process. Although it is currently at the level of consultation, I think it is necessary to give a voice similar to that of NGOs or experts in certain policy-making stages.
