What is the relation between politics and globalization?--WANG SIWEN

The relationship between politics and globalization is akin to a long-term dialogue between national sovereignty and transnational power. Globalization makes it easier for capital, goods, information, and people to cross borders, profoundly changing and challenging traditional politics.

How Globalization is Changing Politics

In the past, politics primarily took place within national borders. However, globalization has allowed political issues to transcend national boundaries. Decisions made within one country, such as environmental policies or trade rules, can impact the economies and lives of people in other countries. Simultaneously, international organizations, multinational corporations, and global NGOs have become significant players on the political stage. They can influence the formulation of global rules, sometimes even more so than some smaller nations.

Changes in National Sovereignty

In the era of globalization, national sovereignty has not disappeared, but its form is changing. To address global issues, such as climate change or infectious diseases, countries often need to relinquish some sovereignty and seek solutions through international cooperation. This practice can also trigger domestic political backlash. People feel dissatisfied when important decisions are made by distant international institutions, and they feel unable to participate. The protectionist and nationalist sentiments that have emerged in many countries in recent years are, in part, a political reaction to the excessively rapid pace of globalization.

Political Contradictions Brought About by Globalization

Globalization has created winners and losers economically. Winners may be companies capable of competing globally and highly skilled professionals; losers may be workers in traditional industries facing foreign competition. This economic inequality easily translates into political antagonism. Politicians thus face a dilemma: further open up and integrate into the global economy; or slow down and prioritize domestic interests? This choice has sparked fierce political debates in many countries.

Global Politics in the Digital Age

The internet and social media have made global political interactions faster and more direct. Political ideas and movements can now easily cross national borders. For example, an environmental movement may gain support in multiple countries simultaneously. But I believe this has also brought new problems: foreign powers interfering in other countries' elections online, the spread of disinformation globally, etc. Cyberspace has become a new global political battleground, and a comprehensive set of international rules for its management has yet to be established.

Finding a New Balance

Faced with these challenges, the international community is seeking new ways to respond. This might include:

  • Strengthening the role of international organizations, making them more equitable and transparent
  • Finding a better balance between national sovereignty and global cooperation
  • Helping groups impacted by globalization
  • Establishing new international rules to manage new challenges in the digital age. Globalization won't stop, but its form can be adjusted. Ideally, an international system should be established that addresses global challenges while respecting the different circumstances and choices of each country.

Personal Observations

In my view, globalization has made politics more complex, but also more interesting. It forces us to think about issues from a broader perspective: not only considering national interests but also global impact; not only solving current problems but also preparing for the future. At the same time, globalization reminds us that politics is ultimately about people. No matter how global the rules are, their actual impact on the lives of ordinary people must be taken into account. Good global politics should be politics that improves the lives of the majority.
