What is the relation between politics and globalization? | Jeong Jinseo

1. Summary

The relationship between politics and globalization has been changing recently. While previous globalization prioritized 'free trade' and 'efficiency,' today, the importance of 'national security' and 'political control' has grown. Governments are using the economy as a political tool, such as restricting exports or limiting investments, to protect their own nations.

This conflict has also extended to the digital realm. Governments are controlling data and information crossing borders, striving to secure and protect "Digital Sovereignty." Now, politics is not merely aiding globalization but actively intervening in and restricting it. Unlike the past, which relied entirely on economic efficiency, we have shifted to an era where politics controls the movement of technology and goods to ensure national safety.

2. What I Learned

Thinking about this question, here is what I learned. First, being closely connected to other countries can be a dangerous factor. I realized that powerful nations can pressure others by using important global networks like economic systems or semiconductor supply chains. I realized that the current technology race has changed from a question of 'who makes products cheaply' to a fight over 'who possesses core technologies.'

Second, the power struggle between the state and giant tech companies was very interesting. Companies like Google or Meta today have powerful political influence comparable to that of a nation. As the government tries to regulate these companies to protect its power, I thought that the battlefield is moving from land to internet servers and data.

3. Discussion

What would happen if powerful nations like the US or China completely blocked access to websites or apps for security reasons? Is building digital barriers for national security the right thing to do, or is it something that hinders technological development and harms global cooperation?

4. Using AI

I used ChatGPT to translate and check the grammar.

Comments

  1. Write a discussion question on a similar topic to mine, and leave my thoughts in the comments. I think such an act has some political legitimacy. There are many opinions that control is needed to defend against large-scale data leakage or cyberattacks, but personally, I think some digital control is needed to prevent certain candidates, political parties, and more broadly, from being used as a propaganda channel for the country because many big tech platforms can greatly influence and change the public opinion. However, complete blocking of access to websites or apps prevents free exchange of knowledge and information. Technological advancement is based on openness and cooperation among various countries, and I think these digital barriers can have negative consequences in the long run in terms of national competitiveness. So, I think we need to think about which direction is ultimately more beneficial to the country in the future, between security that consists of control and innovation that is made through free exchange.
