What is the relation between politics and globalization? - Liangyiqiao

 1. Summary

From the lectures and readings, we learn that politics and economics are deeply connected to globalization.

Politics and globalization:

Governments create the rules that allow global trade, migration, and communication. At the same time, globalization changes political power by increasing the influence of international organizations and multinational companies. Political debates—such as immigration, trade protection, or national identity—are often reactions to global pressures.

Economics and globalization:

Globalization is strongly driven by economic activity. Companies expand across borders, build global supply chains, and search for new markets. As a result, national economies become interdependent, meaning economic problems in one country can quickly affect others. Globalization brings both benefits (growth, technology, opportunities) and challenges (inequality, job competition).

Overall, politics sets the framework for globalization, and economics explains its expansion and impact.

2. Something New and Interesting

One interesting idea from the readings is how global supply chains make the world tightly connected. A single product—like a smartphone—can be designed in one country, assembled in another, and rely on parts from many different places. This shows that no country’s economy stands alone anymore.

Another surprising idea is how globalization can weaken national governments, even though it is often created by political decisions. International companies or institutions sometimes have more influence on certain issues than local governments, which challenges our usual understanding of political power

3. Questions and Discussions

How much control do governments still have over globalization when multinational companies and international institutions are so powerful?

Is economic interdependence good or bad?

Does it create peace through cooperation, or does it increase risks because one crisis spreads to the entire world?

How should countries balance the benefits and the inequalities caused by globalization?

Can political decisions slow down globalization, or is economic pressure too strong?

These questions show that globalization is not only an economic or political issue, but a combination of both, shaping our world in complex ways.
