What is the relation between culture and globalization? - Jang Eun Seok
1.Summary
-This article explains how globalization has been politically realized and historically discussed. It details how globalization has progressed in connection with politics by synthesizing the arguments of various scholars on how they explain this phenomenon.
Although globalization shows a positive outlook with the potential for new emancipatory possibilities, scholars have focused on the characteristics and prospects of political globalizationbecause the argument that it can lead to various problems, such as the loss of autonomy and the fragmentation of the social world, is prevalent.
Political globalization is broadly divided into three dimensions: the geopolitics of global power, global normative culture, and polycentric networks. Each of these possesses its own blind spots, ultimately suggesting that they can become the root cause of conflict among various nations or groups with differing cultures.
2.Interesting points
-Having taken classes and consumed media, I've encountered many discussions about globalization, but most of them only highlight its benefits and paint a positive future. However, this article addresses the problems that globalization can bring about, specifically in the political sphere, focusing particularly on global conflicts. Considering the current international situation, which often trends toward conflict rather than harmony, I feel the need to think seriously about globalization, viewing it not merely as something to be "cautious about." Globalization is not properly prepared could instead lead to greater and more numerous conflicts and, perhaps, even more fragmentation among people than before the era of globalization.
3.Discussion and Conclusion
-As mentioned earlier, rapid, unprepared globalization has a high probability of causing even greater conflict. However, if we remain fragmented without globalization, world development will slow down, and humanity will choose extreme methods (such as war or diplomatic contestations) rather than cooperation and harmony. Thus, I believe globalization is an essential part of a positive future. Rather than competing and engaging in conflict while pursuing individual interests, globalization is a necessary choice if diverse cultures can complement each other's deficiencies, overcome weaknesses, and pool only their strengths.
So, how can globalization be achieved without political issues? The discussion begins here, and I believe the answer can be found in the question of this text: "What is the relation between culture and globalization?" Politics signifies the acquisition of state power. From a global perspective, this can be seen as finding ways to take the interests of other nations, which will inevitably cause inter-state conflict and delay or make globalization impossible. The way to overcome this is through cultural integration.
Just looking at the example of South Korea, we disseminate Hallyu (the Korean Wave) to various nations, sharing music, films, and dramas, and conversely, we also accept foreign cultures such as Japanese animation, American Hollywood films, and European food. That is, cultural globalization is already underway, and its scale continues to expand.
In conclusion, while globalization should ultimately be realized across all fields, including politics, social issues, and culture, I believe the core first step must be cultural globalization.
