What is the relation between culture and globalization? - Ju yewon

1. Summary

Cultural globalization refers to the phenomenon in which ideas, values, and symbolic meanings are exchanged and disseminated worldwide through digital communication, mass media, and international mobility. In this process, individuals form transnational social networks, and different cultures interact with one another, deepening intercultural connectivity through the sharing or hybridization of norms and knowledge systems. However, there is an ongoing debate that cultural globalization expands the influence of dominant cultures. On one hand, critics argue that Western or American-centered values may weaken the uniqueness of local cultures. On the other hand, supporters interpret this integrative process as a natural outcome of technological advancement and the expansion of global trade.

2. Interesting point

I found it interesting that cultural globalization feels like a living being who adapts and develops by itself in a changing era, not just a tradition that must be observed from the perspective of technological development and trade expansion. In particular, Glocalization and Hybridization illustrate this change. Local culture does not just follow the global trend, but acts as a subject of renewing and developing one's own culture by utilizing digital technology and global markets. Like the success of K-culture, there is also a reversal phenomenon in which global culture does not spread in one direction, but rather, local culture creates new trends and standards in the world.

So I found it particularly interesting that cultural globalization is not a process of eliminating local culture, but a process of showing the power and creativity of a culture that is constantly changing and surviving by mixing global elements and local personalities.

3. Discussion

Globalization of cultures seems positive in that it connects and mixes different cultures. But on the other hand, aren't cultures becoming more and more alike as people all over the world consume similar content and tastes?

Like K-culture, there is a phenomenon of local culture spreading all over the world, but I'm actually wondering if it's moving within the strategies of big capital and media companies.

After all, is cultural globalization a process that makes different cultures respectful and coexist, or is it a process that makes cultures transparent and one?
