What is the relation between culture and globalization? -WU JIACHEN

1. Summary

Culture and globalization are closely connected. Globalization allows people, ideas, and traditions to move freely across borders through technology, travel, and communication. This creates opportunities for cultural exchange — for example, the global popularity of K-pop, Hollywood movies, or international cuisine.
However, globalization can also cause cultural homogenization, where unique local traditions and languages are replaced by dominant global trends. Still, many cultures adapt creatively, mixing global and local elements to form new, hybrid identities.

2. What Interested Me

What fascinates me most is how globalization makes the world both bigger and smaller at the same time.
It’s amazing that I can listen to music from Korea, wear sneakers designed in the U.S., and eat sushi made by a local chef — all in one day. Yet, I sometimes wonder if this global lifestyle makes every city feel a little too similar. The tension between connection and loss of uniqueness is what truly captures my interest.

3. Questions Raised

  1. How can countries stay open to global influences without losing their cultural identity?

  2. Is globalization creating a more unified world — or just a more uniform one?

  3.  What responsibilities do we have, as global citizens, to protect and celebrate cultural diversity?
