What is globalization— SEOHYUN S 손서현

What is Globalization?

1. Defining Globalization
Globalization means the world is getting more and more connected. It’s not only about money or trade. It also touches culture, politics, and technology. Even small things we do every day are part of it. Because of faster travel, bigger trade, and the internet, the world feels smaller. For example, when news spreads across countries in a few minutes, or when a product made in one place is sold everywhere  that’s globalization.

2. Dual Nature of Global Flows
Globalization doesn’t make all cultures the same. It changes them in new ways. People around the world can enjoy the same music, sports, or fashion. But at the same time, many people try to protect their own culture. Big companies also change their products to fit local tastes or languages. So globalization mixes the global and the local together.

3. Opportunities and Risks
Globalization gives us many chances. We can study abroad, share ideas, and meet people easily. But there are problems too. Some people lose jobs when companies move to other countries. Some traditions slowly disappear. Social media shows this clearly  it connects people but also creates echo chambers. That means people only see opinions like their own, so it’s hard to understand others.

4. Reflection on Ethnocentrism
In class, I learned about ethnocentrism. It means judging other cultures by your own standards. I realized that many people, including me, sometimes think our way is the best. But that’s not true. When we say other countries’ food or habits are weird, that’s ethnocentrism. Globalization helps us see that no culture is better  just different.

5. The Human Side of Globalization
I can see globalization in my daily life. At the supermarket, I buy bananas from the Philippines or coffee from Brazil. On my phone, I watch K-pop, Hollywood movies, and European fashion all together. It makes the world feel close. But it also shows how every culture has something special to share.

6. Conclusion
To me, globalization is a process that never stops. It changes how people live, work, and think. It has both good and bad sides. The goal is not to stop it, but to make it fair and open for everyone. We should avoid ethnocentrism and respect differences. Globalization can build a world where people cooperate and learn from each other.

  1. Thank you for explaining globalization. I liked how you showed that it is more than trade and money—it also affects culture, politics, and our daily life. I agree that global trends can bring people together but also help local cultures grow. Your point about ethnocentrism was very useful because it reminds us not to judge other cultures as better or worse. I also liked your examples, like food from different countries and K-pop on social media, which make globalization easy to understand. I think you are right that globalization has good and bad sides, and we should try to make it fair and open for everyone.
