 Understanding the Interaction between Culture and Globalization

Globalization not only affects the areas of economy and technology, but also brings important changes in cultural aspects. Cultural globalization refers to the process by which the culture of one country spreads to other countries or creates new cultural forms while accepting foreign cultures. To understand this, it is necessary to recognize that culture is not a simple tradition or custom but a social product that appears in all daily lives such as media, music, movies, food, and fashion. This article summarizes the relationship between culture and globalization, and examines it focusing on new or interesting content and problems that need to be discussed.

The characteristics of cultural globalization

Culture and globalization are closely connected, and cultural globalization can be measured by content consumption and production, language spread, and global chain growth. In order to compensate for the relatively small domestic market, Korea actively consumes foreign media and exports content, and Japan actively exports to some fields such as animation and games, although overseas consumption is limited due to the development of its own media industry. China has limited access to foreign content due to government regulations, but it is gradually expanding its domestic content exports. In the process of cultural globalization, the cultures of some countries become dominant, and local cultures can be transformed, and at the same time, various cultures combine to create a fusion culture.

Numerical indicators and interesting observations

It was interesting that cultural globalization can be measured with **numerical indicators through the data. For example, the degree of cultural globalization can be objectively evaluated by the number of language learners, foreign content consumption, global chain stores, and streaming platform usage statistics. It was also impressive that Korean K-pop and dramas can be measured by global charts and streaming rankings. Finally, the concept of Fusion Culture shows a creative process different from that of simple cultural diffusion in that different cultures combine to create a new form.

Cultural Power and Issues to Discuss

There is a lack of discussion on the long-term impact of cultural globalization on local culture. It is necessary to analyze the possibility that local creations will decrease or traditional cultures will be transformed into commercial cultures due to increased consumption of foreign content. The issue of cultural power imbalance is also an important issue. If some strong cultures dominate other countries' cultures, cultural diversity may be limited, and further discussion is needed as to whether convergence cultures have only positive aspects or even negative effects on cultural identity.
