Title: What is the relation between culture and globalization——YANGCHAOHAN

 1. Summary of the reading materials

Globalization is the most influential social and cultural trend in the modern world. It breaks geographical limitations, connects every country and region closely, and allows people, goods, information, and various cultural forms to flow freely across national borders. Most people hold a simple stereotype toward globalization. They believe that globalization makes all parts of the world follow the same cultural trends, causing local traditional cultures to gradually lose their features and even disappear completely. Many people worry that cultural diversity will eventually be replaced by a single global cultural style. However, after learning and analyzing the reading materials, I realize that the relationship between culture and globalization is far more complex and balanced. Instead of being a one-way negative impact, their relationship is interactive, mutual-promoting, and two-sided.

Globalization provides unprecedented convenient conditions for global cultural exchange. International fashion, food, movies, music and lifestyles spread rapidly across different continents. It makes different cultures collide and communicate more frequently than ever before. Even so, local culture will not be easily eliminated by global trends. On the contrary, the impact brought by globalization makes people more aware of the uniqueness and value of their own traditional culture. When people see diverse global cultures, they begin to cherish their local customs, traditional crafts, and cultural heritage. Therefore, many regions start to actively protect and inherit their traditional culture. At the same time, local culture can absorb advanced creative ideas and modern artistic elements from global culture. It innovates its presentation methods while retaining its core cultural spirit. In return, rich and diverse local cultures enrich the entire global cultural system and make globalization colorful, inclusive, and multi-dimensional instead of monotonous and unified.

2. Interesting and new knowledge I have learned

Before taking this course, my understanding of globalization and culture was very shallow and one-sided. I used to think that globalization only changes and impacts local culture passively. I believed that traditional culture could only accept global cultural trends helplessly and had no choice but to follow international styles. However, through this lesson, I have learned a completely new perspective. Culture is not only influenced by globalization, but can also take the initiative to use globalization to achieve innovation, inheritance and international spread. This two-way interactive relationship is the most valuable knowledge I have gained.

There are many real and vivid examples in daily life that can prove this point. In recent years, Chinese traditional culture has achieved great popularity overseas with the help of globalization. Traditional performances such as lion dance and Sichuan opera face-changing are no longer old-fashioned stage shows. Instead, creators combine them with modern pop music, trendy lighting and new stage performance styles, making traditional art more in line with modern public aesthetics. Even the ancient shadow puppetry art has made bold attempts. Some creators add globally popular cartoon images such as Peppa Pig into shadow puppet stories. This innovative change successfully attracts a large number of young audiences both domestically and internationally, letting traditional ancient art gain new vitality.

In addition, live streaming and short video platforms, which are typical products of globalization, have completely changed the way traditional culture spreads. In the past, traditional cultural performances could only be watched locally and spread slowly. But today, relying on global internet platforms, cultural works can cross borders instantly. Ordinary audiences from different countries can easily watch, understand and even share Chinese traditional culture. It fully proves that globalization provides new opportunities and broader space for the survival and development of traditional culture.

Nevertheless, I also clearly realize that the combination of culture and globalization has obvious drawbacks. In order to pursue online popularity, commercial traffic and global market acceptance, some traditional cultural works are overly modified. The original solemn ritual atmosphere, profound historical background and serious cultural connotation are greatly weakened. Most audiences only pay attention to interesting visual effects and trendy performances, ignoring the deep history and traditional spiritual values behind these cultural works. Excessive commercialization and blind adaptation make traditional culture lose its uniqueness and depth.

 3. Discussion question for class

This cultural phenomenon brings up a meaningful and thought-provoking discussion question. Under the general trend of globalization, should local culture constantly adjust, simplify and transform itself to cater to the aesthetic preferences and consumption habits of global audiences? Nowadays, in many tourist areas and cultural markets, traditional cultural resources are deliberately simplified and packaged into standardized entertainment shows and ordinary tourist souvenirs. In order to pursue commercial profits and global popularity, many detailed traditional cultural rules, historical stories and spiritual meanings are removed. Although these simplified cultural products gain higher exposure and wider dissemination with the help of globalization, they gradually break away from real local life and lose their original cultural essence.

In my personal view, culture and globalization do not need to oppose or conflict with each other. Globalization offers powerful communication channels and international platforms for cultural inheritance and promotion. At the same time, diverse local cultures make globalization inclusive and culturally rich. The key is to maintain a rational balance. We can actively use globalization opportunities to innovate traditional culture and spread local culture to the world. However, we should never blindly cater to global trends and abandon our core cultural values for commercial benefits. Learning to balance modern cultural innovation and traditional cultural authenticity is a crucial problem worthy of long-term thinking and exploration for every modern learner.
